First Quarter of 20th Century, Bagan, Burma
Bamboo, Lacquer

Considerably large in size, this outstanding betel nut box (known in Burmese as kun it) is a beautiful display of Burmese astrological culture. Against an intense black background, and surrounded by whirling red filigree, circular medallions decorate the outer lid of this wonderful betel nut box. On the top are the 8-day Burmese icons known as gyo-shit-lon or "eight-planets". They encircle a prestigious peacock, a symbol of their national pride. Along the sides are twelve adorable depictions of the monthly Burmese Zodiac, known as ya-thi. The inner container boasts graceful bird motifs, and nestled within are two trays.
