Golden Water Pot with Glass Inlay
Golden Water Pot with Glass Inlay
First Quarter of 20th Century, Bagan, Burma
Bamboo, Wood, Lacquer, Thayo, Coloured Glass, Crystals, and Gold Leaf
This handsome water pot exhibits a slender neck that leads up to a wide cup-shaped lip. It comfortably lays on an hour-glass shaped stand, with an accompanying upturned cup above. It is one of the more rare and unusual forms of Burmese lacquerware. Vibrant red fills the inside, a vivid contrast to the rich outer surface, where thayo (paste made out of lacquer sap and ash) tendrils and coloured glass mingles above a golden covered lacquer surface. Droplets of rounded resin and spikey crystal in the motifs further imparts a difference in texture.
A similar piece was exhibited at the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore.
