A Lovely Bowl with Rich Gold and Glass Decorations

A Lovely Bowl with Rich Gold and Glass Decorations

$0.00

Late 19th Century, Toungoo, Bago, Burma
Bamboo, Lacquer, Thayo, Gold Leaf and Coloured Glass Inlay

Simple in form, this precious bowl tapers down slightly with a slender band near the top. Raised thayo (paste made of lacquer and ash) strands in whirling filigree and floral patterns span across the outer surface, elevated by the generous layers of gold and dotted by sparkling glass inlay - this is in striking contrast to the bold red inner walls. Specially embellishing the base of the bowl are elegant Burmese characters written in thayo that state the maker’s name: Saya Zaw. (Saya means “Master” in Burmese).
