Treasure Box with Carving
19th Century, Jiangxi Province, Southern China
Wood, Lacquer, and Gold. Metal Fittings.
Finely carved on the front doors of this treasure box is a scene of a dignified Zhuang Yuan (状元), the champion scholar of ancient China, identified by his official hat and the parasol carried behind him. He stands in a peaceful garden-scape, enjoying the company of his beloved wife, most likely a princess, who stands across from him, gently cradling their baby in her arms. The lady’s dignified status can be seen from the presence of her servant carrying a large palace fan for her. This is most likely a cherished moment as the scholar brings his noble wife to visit his hometown.
Embellishing the corners around this scene are auspicious flying bats - a symbol of prosperity. Red lacquer richly covers the surface, contrasting with the darker pigments, and heightened by remnants of gold leaf. The front handles are in the shape of a fish, a lucky symbol of great wealth.
