Pair of Stone Guardian Lions
Pair of Stone Guardian Lions
Early - Mid 18th Century, Shanxi Province, Northern China
Grey Stone
The lion is regarded as an auspicious beast, and the ancient Chinese believed that they had the ability to suppress and expel evil forces. Hence, stone lions such as these were used to guard entrances to temples, official buildings and residences. Three lions are depicted on each of this beautiful stone sculptures. Rubbed by loving hands over centuries, creating a rich, dark, glass-like patina, the upper lions crouch with heads facing outwards, which undoubtedly contributes to their charm.
More pronounced lions grace down the front and sides, exhibiting plump bodies and luscious manes. They are depicted in slightly varied postures, some looking straight ahead while others turn to look over their shoulders. Joy birds emerge from swirling floral groves featuring plum blossoms or lotus clusters, while circular longevity shou symbols also appear on the surface - they are well wishes for happiness and long-life.
