$0.00
Late 19th Century, Mandalay, Burma
Wood, Lacquer, Thayo, Coloured Glass, and Gold Leaf
Encircled by flaring ridges leading to an upper parasol-like pinnacle at the top and a slender waisted base at the bottom, this offering bowl (known in Burmese as hsun ok) is a fine example of extraordinary lacquer ware from Burma. Eight prancing Chinthe Lions adorn the outer widest belly of the offering bowl, their wondrous thick thayo (paste made out of lacquer sap and ash) forms surrounded by dotted glass inlays. They alternate with intense green glass formed diamond-shaped cartouches, and clover shapes outlined by mercury-backed silver glass.
