Golden Offering Bowl with Floral Glass inlay

$0.00

Late 19th Century, Mandalay, Burma
Wood, Lacquer, Thayo, Coloured Glass, and Gold Leaf

Slightly stout in shape, this offering bowl (known in Burmese as hsun ok) is undoubtedly a classic work of art and a statement of religious generosity. It stands as a lid with a pagoda-like finial top, nestled over a rounded bowl attached to a ring of slim banisters and a flaring foot. Richly embellishing the gold and orange surface are raised thayo (paste made of lacquer and ash) tendril motifs that fluidly swirl in curling organic waves. Speckled throughout the whirling motif are multi-hued glass inlay in the shape of wide bursting flowers that provide an extra dimension of colours.
