Bamboo, Lacquer, and Gold Leaf
Fastidiously knotted bamboo forms the excellent textured surface on this food basket. The open lattice design is not only striking, but very rare; it was most likely meant to keep precious offerings. Primed with both red and black lacquer, the outer surface is gloriously covered in thick layers of gold leaf that gives it a luxurious metallic sheen. Coupled with the complex woven patterns, this basket most likely belonged to the upper echelons of Burmese society.
