Early 19th Century, Hunan Province, South Central China
Lacquer and Gold Leaf on Wood
Hemmed by a row of neat petals and covered in lacquer and gold remnants, a charming scene unfolds on this carving. Amidst large towering flowers and clusters of leaves, three peculiar pets grace the landscape. Small and petite in comparison to the giant birds flanking them, they are most likely a representation of the family's pets, possibly a type of miniature lamb or small dog. Two of them are shown perched atop stone platforms, while one rests peacefully within a central enclosure. It is a truly interesting motif that forms a window into the lifestyle and loves of ancient Chinese bourgeoisie.
