17th Century, Jiangxi Province, Southern China
Pigments on Wood

Weaving through an ornate overlapping grove of plants, three goats are depicted gallivanting under a central sun in a motif known as "San Yang Qi Tai" (三陽晵泰). In Chinese, the word 'goat' (yang, 羊) and sun (yang, 阳) rhymes with 'positive energy' (yang, 阳). As such, three goats suggest positive things, but especially the arrival of spring when the positive energy of the sun was in the ascendant.

This carving is framed with a black silk base in a shadow box with a silverish gold border.
