In Tibetan Buddhism, there are four heavenly kings that are believed to watch over the four cardinal directions. Considered sacred protectors of the realm, they are also known as the Chaturmaharaja in Sanskrit. One of them, Virudhaka, is depicted on this carpet; he gracefully wields his iconic sword, while floating in the clouds. Virudhaka, decked in full military regalia, he is also regarded as one of the Twenty-Four dharmapalas who manifest to protect the Dharma (Buddhism teachings).
