A Special Pair of Pillar Carpets with Rising Dragons and Precious Treasures
Vintage, Late 1980's, Shigatse, Tibet
Tibetan Sheep Wool & Dyes
From the long dimension and motifs present, this pair of carpets was used as pillar covers. When wrapped around a pillar, the dragon bodies would align to create a beautifully weaving form. The five-clawed imperial dragons rise above their realm of splendid mountains and ocean, and are a symbol of bravery, nobility and power. As symbols of positive masculine energy, their images are considered to be sacred and auspicious, bringing fortuity to the beholder.
In the center, emerging from the waves, is the sacred Mount Meru. Hanging above them are jewel loops and treasured Buddhism symbols such as the canopy and endless knot. These garlands are securely held by grinning zipak faces (also known as Faces of Majesty, they are divine mythical creatures tasked with protecting treasures) that embellish along the top.
