Gesso Cabinet with Floral Cartouche Motif
$0.00
Late 18th Century, Ngari, West Tibet
Painted on Wood.
Mineral Pigments, Gesso, and Gold Gilt
Featuring warm red and brown colours highlighted by traces of gold, an assembly of blossoming flowers outstretched with vines encircle a sacred eight-petaled Baoxiang Flower on each front panel. A rare form of “stone” gesso work is featured, which incorporates a higher concentration of stone powder to the mixture in order to form a thicker and harder paste, mostly present on the Baoxiang flower's petals.
Solid single planks of wood were used to construct the sides - a rare and notable feature as wood was incredibly scarce in the Western part of Tibet.
