Bamboo Bordered Cabinet with Offering Goddess Motif
Bamboo Bordered Cabinet with Offering Goddess Motif
Mid 19th Century, Shigatse, Central Tibet
Painted on Cotton over Wood. Carved Wood.
Mineral Pigments, Gesso, Silver Gilt, and Gold Gilt
Hemmed by a thick border carved with concave bamboo-like notches, this resplendent cabinet proudly boasts a charming Offering Goddess on each of its front panels. Each celestial deity rests in positions of ease, swathed in scarves and jewellery. They are surrounded by various precious items and belongings of the revered Chakravartin; the importance of these floating offerings is highlighted by their prominent gesso outlines and gold leaf embellishments. The vivid artwork is fastidiously illustrated on cotton over wood, an uncommon workmanship on cabinets, that is further accentuated by the radiant silver and gold gilt. The wonderful artwork on this precious cabinet is a testimony of the refined and sophisticated sense of aestheticism in Tibetan art.
