Betel Nut Box with Royal Landscape Design
Betel Nut Box with Royal Landscape Design
Early 20th Century, Bagan, Burma
Bamboo, Lacquer
Rich in colour and fastidiously covered in carved yun-designs, the landscape motifs etched on the surface display royal settings - a regal king situated in his opulent court can be seen, engaging in discussion. This is known in Burmese as the nandwin design, a highly beloved motif showcasing the Burmese's pride and independence, whilst under British Colonial rule.
This fine betel nut box (known in Burmese as kun it) is comprised of four parts: a deep cover that almost reaches the base, a lower container section and two inner trays.
A similar piece was exhibited at the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore. See Asian Civilizations Museum Exhibition "Cities and Kings, Ancient Treasures from Myanmar". Cat.52, Page 146
