Late 19th Century, Mandalay, Burma
Wood, Lacquer, and Thayo
Embellishing the top surface of this red offering bowl (known in Burmese as hsun ok) is a charming band of chinthe lions, made from carefully formed thayo (paste made out of lacquer sap and ash). Chinthe lions are a beloved Burmese symbol for protection, and sculptures of them were usually found guarding the entrances to sacred sites such as stupas and pagodas. Portrayed prancing about, the mythical lions are surrounded by clover shaped cartouches. Coiling wave-like vines and simple flowers embellish the spaces between them.
